Lo studio esplorativo del vasto "heritage" della musica tradizionale anglo-scoto-irlandese prosegue anche
quest'anno con entusiasmo ed impegno, focalizzando questa volta sulla particolare espressività sia del canto
gaelico scozzese (veramente unico nel suo genere, capace di ottenere un coinvolgimento totale dello spettatore che si ritrova ipnoticamente in simbiosi con il singer immerso nella rivisitazione delle storie a volte fantastiche, a volte tragiche, rievocate dalla storia e dal pathos del canto) sia della musica da danza scozzese riportata da alcuni degli strumenti piu' cari alla tradizione come la cornamusa, il violino e la chitarra, per un sound allo stesso tempo molto melodico e dal ritmo coinvolgente ed originale, presentato con una visione fresca e moderna del folk piu' tradizionale ed aggiornato con la vivacità di arrangiamenti innovativi ed originali.

Differenti gli stili e le musiche analizzate e sviscerate nel corso delle cinque precedenti edizioni del Festival, sempre caratterizzate dalla presentazione di interpreti di grande raffinatezza e di prestigio assoluto (sovente protagonisti del palcoscenico di un folk festival per la prima volta in Italia...), che vuole sempre rinnovarsi e riservare un'attenzione particolare soprattutto ai giovani talenti ed interpreti della musica tradizionale anglo-scoto-irlandese.

La collaborazione ed il sostegno offerto al Festival per il secondo anno consecutivo da una istutuzione culturale del livello e del prestigio internazionale di "Creative Scotland" conferisce al Festival quell'ulteriore valore qualitativo che lo rende unico ed originale nel nostro panorama culturale e musicale.

L'artwork della famosa "Visual Artist/Designer" di Galway Lorraine Fletcher migliora la qualità espressiva del Festival e rinforza il legame del Festival con quello spirito innovativo e moderno piu' dei dei giovani artisti che dedicano la loro arte al meraviglioso mondo della musica tradizionale e folk anglo-scoto.irlandese, sempre nel massimo rispetto ed in linea con i principi ed i contenuti insiti nella cultura tradizionale.

Elena è nata in Sardegna, ipovedente dalla nascita, ha ereditato dal padre l'amore per il canto ed in particolare per la musica folk che ha seguito con molta passione fin dalla sua tenera età.
Da bambina ha cantato nei cori di chiesa ed in seguito ha partecipato ad alcuni programmi settimanali
trasmessi da una stazione televisiva locale. Con il tempo Elena è diventata un'artista esperta esibendosi per una platea sempre piu' ampia, acquisendo progressivamente uno stile di canto e di chitarra di tipo professionale.

All’età di 18 anni Elena, capace di parlare sei lingue oltre a quella gaelica, decise di andare a vivere a Londra dove lavoro’ con il famoso “London Bulgarian Choir” del quale fu anche la co-fondatrice.
Nel 2006 si sposto’ ad Edimburgo dove il suo lavoro presso la “Royal Scottish Academy of Art” le permise di essere profondamente coinvolta nella scena musicale scozzese.

Nell’ottobre 2012 ha vinto il terzo premio in occasione del “Royal National Mòd”, uno dei piu’ noti ed importanti eventi sulla cultura gaelica, nella competizione “Ladies Silver Pendant”.

Le sue influenze principali includono: Karen Matheson per il canto gaelico e Cristy Moore per la musica irlandese.

Elena è una delle giovani interpeti piu' valide del canto gaelico in Scozia. Tra questi canti quelli ossianici presentano in genere tutti una grande uniformità. Alternando il tono epico con il lirico e l’elegiaco, narrano un’enorme quantità di storie assai intricate, i cui motivi dominanti sono la guerra, la virtù cavalleresca dei guerrieri, il melanconico destino di varie coppie di amanti o di sposi, con descrizioni assai fresche di paesaggio romanticamente animato. I canti sono stesi in una prosa ritmica, semplice di lessico e di sintassi, appassionata e pittoresca, ricca di nuove metafore.

Tra i canti di lavoro la documentazione più ricca proviene dalle cosiddette "waulking song", le canzoni che accompagnava la battitura dei panni di tweed, un lavoro manuale e di pertinenza delle donne. La struttura della song si basa su un verso breve cantato da una voce solista, alternato ad un ritornello cantato in coro, sovente molto lungo e pieno di sillabe senza senso, caratterizzato da un ritmo marcato ed ipnotico.

I canti d’amore sono spesso eredità dei canti diffusi dai trovatori e trovieri medievali.

La ballad è invece un canto che racconta una storia che appresenta la realtà del quotidiano, spesso episodi tragici tratti dalla cronaca oppure ispirati ad argomenti più favolistici e fantastici. Molte ballate riprendono un coro che ripete lo stesso ritornello alternandolo al racconto della storia per far partecipare arrivamente gli ascoltatori invitati a ripetere in coro piu' volte il ritornello.

Elena è attualmente residente a Lerwick, nelle Isole Shetland ed è diventata un’artista molto popolare ed apprezzata nel circuito dei concerti e dei festival di musica folk del Regno Unito, molto seguita sia per la qualità del proprio materiale musicale che per la scelta e gli arrangiamenti del tutto personali delle tunes tradizionali scoto-irlandesi che ripropone.
Il successo ed i giudizi positivi espressi dalla critica musicale per il suo album di debutto, "Journey" testimoniano il fervido interesse alimentato dalla sua attività artistica.

Di recente Elena ha anche fondato il nuovo gruppo "Helly on da SEA", a 3-piece folk band con base nelle Shetland, composto da Amanda Shearer, lead vocals e mandolino, Sarah Brown al violino ed Elena alla chitarra.
Amanda fa parte della scena musicale delle Isole Shetland da molti anni ed ha partecipato a numerosi folk festivals importanti come il "Green Fest" in Manchester; Sarah Brown è cresciuta nell'ambiuente musicale di Inverness ed è diventata una protagonista stabile in da Lounge.

Come Elena stessa ha dichiarato: “Nothing compares to the authentic power of Scots, Irish and Gaelic folk and the way it transports both performer and their audience into its melodies and narrative. No other music seems to convey so vividly the beauty and hardship of a land and its people. This is a truly compelling experience for me and one I hope to share with your audiences”.


Sardinian-born Elena inherited her father’s love of singing, particularly folk music, from a very early age. As a young child she sang in church choirs and later even appeared weekly on local Italian TV. By the time she was a teenager Elena was an experienced artist performing for large audiences and was singing and playing guitar professionally. Today, she is a popular personality on the gigs and festivals circuit, as well as writing and singing her own material – and enjoying the success of her debut album, "Journey".

Since moving to the UK at the age of 18, Elena, who speaks six languages and is learning Gaelic, has lived in London, where she co-founded and toured with the successful London Bulgarian choir. In 2006 she moved to Edinburgh, where her work at the Royal Scottish Academy of Art gave her the opportunity to become fully immersed in the music scene in Scotland. Elena is now resident in Lerwick, Shetland, where, along with her singing performances at a full range of venues from gigs to festivals, she’s working on her own material and writing arrangements for old traditional songs.

Music is Elena’s inspiration – being visually-impaired since birth has enabled her to impart a very special meaning to her folk music. As she says, “Nothing compares to the authentic power of Scots, Irish and Gaelic folk and the way it transports both performer and their audience into its melodies and narrative. No other music seems to convey so vividly the beauty and hardship of a land and its people.

Elena Piras has recently joined the Shetland folk scene after moving to Lerwick. Elena has performed at various venues and festivals around the world and brings sweet harmonies to the group.

Elena won third prize at the Royal National Mòd in the ladies Silver Pendant competition. The Mòd is one of the biggest and most well known celebrations of Gaelic culture in the world.

"Helly on da SEA" is a 3-piece folk band based in Shetland, comprised of Amanda Shearer on lead vocals and mandolin, Sarah Brown on fiddle and Elena Piras on guitar.
Amanda has been a part of the music scene in Shetland for many years. She has played at various festivals including the Green Fest in Manchester back in 2010. Sarah Brown grew up in Inverness and has recently become a regular player in da Lounge. The girls met through informal sessions and have been playing together ever since, creating a helly wherever they go!

Scott Wood

Lo “Scott Wood Trio” si è formato nell’estate del 2012 in occasione del famoso “Piping Live! Festival” e fin dagli esordi ha attirato l’attenzione degli appassionati per l’energia e la dinamicità della propria musica, caratterizzata da uno stile unico, sempre incline ad una base melodica affascinante e completato da modalità innovative negli arrangiamenti. Nonostante la giovane età dei musicisti, i componenti del trio vantano un’esperienza artistica molto intensa e profondamente maturata nella scena scozzese; il trio riesce a sorprendere l’audience con elaborazione di un suono originale, basato sulla fusione della cornamusa, del piffero, della chitarra e del violino, risultando in una miscela sonora moderna e giovanile, trascinante e di particolare impatto emotivo.
Lo Scott Wood Trio è stato definito come “The most exciting new traditional act in Scotland ”,
Skerryvore.

Con Mhairi Mackinnon al violino e Ron Jappy alla chitarra, il Trio riesce a creare un sound melodico e raffinato. Scott è attualmente membro del rinomato gruppo internazionale dei “Red Hot Chilli Pipers” ed è stato finalista nella prestigiosa competizione “BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of The Year 2013”.

L’elegante approccio violinistico ha permesso a Mhairi di essere invitata da molti artisti come turnista e di partecipare alla registrazione di numerosi album, mentre la’intensa carriera artistica di Ron sia come solista che come membro di differenti gruppi lo ha portato in giro per il mondo. Tutti e tre i musicisti hanno conseguito il proprio diploma musicale presso il famoso “Royal Conservatoire of Scotland”.

Lo Scott Wood Trio ha fatto il suo debutto al “Piping Live” Festival nel 2012, raccogliendo un tale successo durante la settimana del Festival da dovere accontentare la richiesta di suonare ben altre cinque volte durante il Festival, incluso durante la sessione "New Folk Friday" insieme ai “Niteworks” ed ai “Rura”. Il trio e’ stato anche il primo gruppo a suonare presso il "Folklub", un nuovo evento folk in stile con sede a Glasgow. In occasione di questo importante appuntamento hanno pubblicato il loro EP di debutto, che è stato registrato presso i “ La Chunky Studios ” con Barry Reid della “Tracherous Orchestra”.

Hanno anche avuto una serie di apparizioni radiofoniche tra le quali quelle alla stazione "Celtic Music Radio", alla trasmissione “Placet Pipe” ed alla trasmissioni della BBC Radio Scotland “Pipeline” e "Pipeline’s Best of 2012".

Finora, nel 2013, hanno supportato i concerti degli Skerryvore presso “Ullapool Villane Hall” il 3 Gennaio e presso “Walzer Halls”, Troons, il 19 Aprile e quelli dei Mànran alla “Queens Hall”, Edimburgo il 17 Aprile e presso “Oran Mor” a Glasgow il 19 Aprile.

Lo scorso 17 Aprile sono stati filmati dal canale televisivo in lingua gaelica “BBC Alba” per l’evento di presentazione dell’edizione del 2013 del Festival “Piping Live !” presso “The National Piping Centre” a Glasgow ed hanno poi partecipato anche ad altri prestigiosi spettacoli televisi. Durante il periodo estivo e per i prossimi mesi il trio sarà impegnato a partecipare ad alcuni importanti festival tra i quali il “Tiree Music Festival” nell’Isola di Tiree, alla 10° edizione del “Piping Live!” a Glasgow ed allo “Speyfest” a Fochabers.

Scott Wood (Pipes, Whistles & Flute), da Erskine, ha iniziato a suonare la cornamusa all’età di 12 anni con i “Boys Brigade”, il suo insegnante è stato Gordon McCready di Renfrew ed ora sta studiando per conseguire il “BA Scottish Music Degree” presso il “Royal Conservatoire of Scotland”, dove riceve lezioni di cornamusa da Finlay MacDonald, Stuart Samson, e Allan MacDonald ed altre lezioni di whistle con Marc Duff. Nel gennaio 2013 è stato finalista nella prestigiosa competizione “BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year” ed attualmente è membro del famoso gruppo dei “Red Hot Chili Pipers”e spesso suona anche con gli Skerryvore e con I Mànran con I quali ha partecipato a due tours estivi in America.
Scott ha iniziato la sua attività professionale nelle “pipe band” di Scozia con la “Johnstone Pipe Band” ed attualmente suona con la “Strathclyde Police Pipe Band”. E’ anche “Pipe Sergeant” della “National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland” nella Senior Band, è whistle-player nella “backing band” ed è anche “Pipe Major” della “Development Band”. Scott fornisce regolarmente lezioni e workshops nel Regno Unito ed in tutta Europa.

Scott usa una Bagpipe “Lawrie” o “McCallum” con un chanter McCallum Bagpipes Bb”, Border Pipes Garvie e whistles Goldie.

Mhairi Mackinnon, originaria del Perthshire, è una eccitante ed innovative violinista, dotata di idee fresche, estro e passione. Per molti anni ha studiato con il violinista di Dunkeld Pete Clark del gruppo “Pete Clark and the Dunkeld & District Strathspey and Reel Society”, prima di accettare il suo posto presso il “National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music” dove ha seguito un tutoraggio con i Blazin’ Fiddles e con Iain MacFarlane. Mhairi ha sviluppato uno stile creativo unico particolarmente influenzato dal “West Highland style”. Il suo approccio aggraziato ed il suo fascino hanno contribuito ad aumentare l’interesse sulla sua musica permettendole di collaborare come turnista alla registrazione di numerosi lavori in tutta la Scozia e di suonare in molti Paesi come la Germania, l'Irlanda, la Francia, a Dubai e in America. Mhairi ha infatti suonarto in molti festival e concerti con numerose band ma anche come solista. Da sottolineare anche che Mhairi ha suonato in occasione di eventi prestigiosi come il Festival Interceltico di Lorient e le Olimpiadi di Londra 2012. Mhairi sta attualmente studiando per conseguire la laurea in Musica presso il “Royal Conservatoire of Scotland” oltre a seguire la sua carriera nella scena della musica tradizionale e folk. Le principali influenza di Mhairi includono: Alisdair White, Patsy Reid, Aiden O’Rourke, Chris Thile, Flook, Crooked Still, Lau, Maeve Mackinnon, Punch Brothers e KAN. Mhairi usa un microfono accusound e le corde Pirastro Evah Pirazzi.


Ron Jappy è nato nel piccolo villaggio costiero di Findochty, nel nord est della Scozia. Ha inziato le prime lezioni di violino fin dalla prima infanzia e tra i suo maestri risultano Donald Barr & James Alexander. Diventato residente a Glasgow nel 2007 per studiare alla “Royal Scottish Academy Of Music And Drama”, Ron ha ricevuto lezioni da Alistair McCulloch ed ha iniziato a suonare la chitarra con Innes Watson.
Ron ha suonato in numerosi Paesi come in Cornovaglia, la Isola di Man, la Germania , il Texas ed il Galles ed ha suonato diversi concerti come supporto ai “The Red Hot Chili Pipers”, “Duncan Chisholm & Ivan Drever”, “Wolfstone” ed “Aly Bain & Phil Cunningham”. Ron ha suonato anche in Nigeria con Becca Fox per la “Caledonian Society”. Sia nel 2011 che nel 2012 è stato uno degli 8 finalisti invitati al prestigioso “Glenfiddich Fiddle Championship” in Blair Castle ed è stato invitato a suonare in occasione degli “Highlands & Islands Fiddle Masters” in Oban nel marzo 2012. Ron ha insegnato in tutta la Scozia per una serie di progetti di sensibilizzazione e comunità, come pure in privato a Glasgow. Le sue principali influenze includono: John Mayer, Tony Byrne, Kris Drever, Innes Watson, Brian May, Aidan O’Rourke, Gordon Gunn, John Doyle, Eric Clapton, Duncan Chisolm, Ali Hutton, Kevin Henderson, David Gilmour Bryan Gear, Matheu Watson, Allan Henderson, Adam Sutherland, James Valentine,

Formed in the summer of 2012 for the Piping Live! Festival, The Scott Wood Trio are an energetic and dynamic band, with driving tunes and innovative arrangements. With a wealth of personal musical experiences behind them, the trio combines together with a mixture of pipes/whistle, fiddle and guitar to create a tight, powerful and youthful live sound.

With Mhairi Mackinnon on fiddle and Ron Jappy on guitar, The Scott Wood Trio creates a driving, yet tasteful sound. Scott is currently a member of the world renowned Red Hot Chilli Pipers, and was a finalist in the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Of The Year 2013. Mhairi’s graceful approach to fiddle playing has allowed her to be invited by many artists as a session musician and has recorded on numerous albums and EP’s, and Ron’s career as a soloist and group performer has taken him to a number of venues all over the world. All three musicians have studied music degrees at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

The Scott Wood Trio made their debut appearance at Piping Live! 2012, and had such a successful week that they were asked to perform another 5 times throughout the festival including the “New Folk Friday” gig alongside Niteworks and Rura. The trio were also the very first ever band to play at the monthly “Folklub” – a brand new Folk Club styled event based in Glasgow. At this event, they released their Debut EP, which was recorded at La Chunky Studios with Barry Reid of the Treacherous Orchestra. They have also had a number of radio appearances including Celtic Music Radio, Planet Pipe, and a live broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland’s Pipeline as well being on Pipeline’s – “Best of 2012”. So far in 2013, they supported both Skerryvore and Mànran, played at the Piping Live! Launch Event and were filmed for the Gaelic television channel BBC Alba as well as many other performances. The trio are looking forward to the rest of the year and have a busy summer of gigs and festivals lined up, including Tiree Music Festival, Piping Live! and Speyfest to name a few. “The Scott Wood Trio are an epiphany of the current traditional music scene in Scotland. For the VI° edition ' Festival famous Irish artist Lorraine Fletcher, Visual Artist/Designer & Web Design & Marketing Assistant, has designed the poster with her unique style, making it an amazing piece of art.

About
Lorraine Fletcher originally from Armagh but now based in Galway, has been working professionally as an artist from 2008,she wanted to work as an artist since an early age,always sketching and painting...it was the natural thing to do.

This love of painting lead to studying Combined Studies in Fine Art & Design at the University of Ulster Belfast,graduating in 2002.

She worked in the design field, drawing but in a more technical sense, until 2008 when the recession came about, the decision was made to focus back on painting as a full time profession.

She held a solo exhibition in the spring of 2008 entitled "Hands On" which was a series of detailed watercolours and oils, inspired by musicians, focusing on their hands on the instruments. Being a musician herself, the paintings portray her love for the music through the use of colour and composition.
Some of the qualities in Lorraine's work are the vibrant colours and attention to detail.

Lorraine creates images which more recently have focused on the female form, in particular the face. She portrays beauty and tenderness in some paintings whereas in others are qualities of strength with the use of more striking facial features.

The 1950 era is a more recent interest of Lorraine's, the vintage and elegant portrayal of the female form.

Her distinctive paintings are characteristic by a love of colour and strong composition influenced by artists such as R.Lenkiewicz, Fabian Perez and Gustav Klimt.
